Global Graphene Group Named R&D 100 Award Finalist

DAYTON, OHIO, January 16, 2020 – Global Graphene Group (G3) was honored recently by R&D World, naming G3’s graphene-protected lithium metal anode for rechargeable metal batteries solution (HELiX™) a finalist for the 2019 R&D 100 Award. The R&D 100 Awards recognize the top 100 most technologically significant new products of the year.

HELiX is a single-layer graphene-protected lithium metal technology making high-energy rechargeable metal batteries viable. It allows extremely low anode usage (anode/cathode ratio ≤ 10%), creating an energy density over 350 Wh/kg and 1,000 Wh/L, which yields a 60-80% improvement over current lithium-ion batteries. This offers unprecedented opportunities for advanced portable devices/electric vehicles.

HELiX is a readily available, drop-in, graphene-enabled anode solution for all types of high-energy, lithium metal batteries (e.g. advanced Li-ion, all solid-state batteries, Li-S, Li-Se, and Li-air cells). It adds immediate value to any rechargeable battery, including, but not limited to power drones, renewable energy storage systems, aerospace applications, unmanned vehicles, and electric vehicles (EVs). Additionally, due to its performance, batteries can be reduced in size by 30-40% while still providing the required energy. This provides room for other components or allows for significant reductions in size and weight.  The most promising opportunity for HELiX graphene-enabled anode solutions is in EV batteries, where it can replace incumbent (graphite) technology today and drive an accelerated adoption of EVs due to improved cost and performance.

“Rechargeable lithium metal batteries for next-generation portable devices and EVs must meet several challenging requirements: safety, high energy density, long cycle life, and low cost. This is the end-goal laid out by nearly every EV manufacturer for the foreseeable future,” said Dr. Aruna Zhamu, VP of New Product / Process Development at G3.

“Global Graphene Group has developed an enabling anode-protecting technology that is essential to successful operation of safe, high-energy and long-cycle-life lithium metal batteries working with liquid, quasi-solid, or solid electrolytes,” continued Dr. Zhamu. “This HELiX product has overcome the long-standing issues thus far impeding successful commercialization of all the rechargeable batteries that make use of lithium metal as the anode material. Our HELiX technology is available and offers a drop-in, scalable, facile, cost reducing improvement over current solutions. It lowers the battery cost to less than $100 US $/kWh.”

G3 developed and produces the HELiX solution in its Dayton, Ohio, facilities.

G3 was named an R&D 100 winner in 2018 for its graphene-enabled silicon anode (GCATM).

Global Graphene Group Achieves First REACH-Certified Product

Global Graphene Group (G3) has finalized certification for its first product with the European Union’s Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH).

G3’s Gi-SL-B series (N002-PS), a single layer of graphene oxide dispersed in water, has achieved the REACH certification. G3 is registered with REACH to ship one to 10 metric tons of its N002-PS product into the EU annually with C.S.B. GmbH., the only representative for G3 in the EU. The REACH certification for this product secures G3 the right to market the product in Europe.

REACH is a regulation of the European Union, adopted to improve the protection of human health and the environment from the risks that can be posed by chemicals, while enhancing the competitiveness of the EU chemicals industry. It also promotes alternative methods for the hazard assessment of substances in order to reduce the number of tests on animals. REACH establishes procedures for collecting and assessing information on the properties and hazards of substances.

G3 is also a proud member of the REACH graphene consortium, taking an active role in how graphene solutions are handled in Europe.

“This REACH certification is vital as we ramp up production of our single-layer graphene oxide worldwide,” said Adam Quirk, Vice President of Business Development at G3. “Our team has worked towards this REACH certification for the past six months, and we’re working to have additional products certified in the coming months.”

As the leader in the graphene industry, Global Graphene Group adheres to strict environmental, health and safety procedures. G3 has a dedicated internal team focused on environmental, health and safety impacts of our manufacturing for our employees, our customers and our local communities. About REACH
REACH aims to improve the protection of human health and the environment through the better and earlier identification of the intrinsic properties of chemical substances. This is done by the four processes of REACH, namely the registration, evaluation, authorization and restriction of chemicals. REACH also aims to enhance innovation and competitiveness of the EU chemicals industry. More about REACH: https://echa.europa.eu/regulations/reach/understanding-reach

NAI Names Dr. Bor Jang to 2019 Fellows Class

DAYTON, OHIO, December 12, 2019 – The National Academy of Inventors (NAI) has named Dr. Bor Jang, CEO and Co-founder of Global Graphene Group (G3), a 2019 Fellow. Dr. Jang joins a class of 169 innovators from around the world in this year’s Fellows group.

According to the NAI, “Election to NAI Fellow is the highest professional distinction accorded solely to academic inventors. To date, NAI Fellows hold more than 41,500 issued U.S. patents, which have generated over 11,000 licensed technologies and companies, and created more than 36 million jobs. In addition, over $1.6 trillion in revenue has been generated based on NAI Fellow discoveries.”

Dr. Jang is recognized as the world’s number 1 graphene inventor, writing the first patent on graphene, B. Z. Jang, et al, “Nano-scaled Graphene Plates,” U.S. Pat. Appl. No. 10/274,473 (10/21/2002); now U.S. Pat. No. 7,071,258 (07/04/2006), two years before the Nobel laureates Andre Geim and Konstantin Novoselov published their results on mechanical exfoliation of graphene using Scotch tape. He is an inventor on at least 245 issued U.S. patents, at least 290 pending U.S. patent applications, at least 85 active international (PCT) patent applications, at least 80 more expired international (PCT) patent applications, and many dozens of foreign issued patents and pending patent applications based on those international (PCT) patent applications. The vast majority of these relate to graphene, graphene-related products, batteries, battery components, supercapacitors, and/or fuel cells.

Dr. Jang’s influence on the graphene market is immense. His graphene-enabled innovations have helped lead G3 to become the world’s largest mass producer of single-layer graphene and graphene-enhanced silicon anode.

“It is a sincere honor to be recognized by the National Academy of Inventors,” said Dr. Jang. “I have dedicated my career to driving innovation and continue to focus on bringing new technologies to market to make a difference in the world.”

“We are proud of Dr. Jang’s recognition by the NAI,” said Dr. Aruna Zhamu, Vice President of New Product/Process Development and Co-Founder of Global Graphene Group. “Innovation is a key to our company’s success, and Dr. Jang’s contributions to our scientific team are immeasurable.”

Prior to starting G3, Dr. Jang served as the head of Department of Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics at North Dakota State University from 2002-2005 and was promoted to Dean of College of Engineering and Computer Science at Wright State University from 2005 until 2010 when he retired from academia. He holds a B.S. in Physics from National Central University in Taiwan, and an M.S. and PhD in Materials Science and Engineering from MIT.

Dr. Jang will be inducted into the NAI Fellows Program in a ceremony to be held in Phoenix, Arizona, on April 10, 2020.
