TOP FEMALE SCIENTIST SURPASSES 475 US PATENTS AND APPLICATIONS

With International Women’s Day on March 8, 2020, Global Graphene Group (G3) is excited to celebrate our co-founder, Dr. Aruna Zhuma, who recently passed the milestone of 475 US patents issued and applications filed in her career. Dr. Zhamu is recognized as the world’s number 2 graphene inventor. She is the President of Honeycomb Battery Company, a subsidiary of Global Graphene Group, and the VP of New Product / Process Development at G3.Dr. Zhamu’s impact on the scientific community is massive. She has filed more than 215 graphene-related US patents. She now holds over 450 US patents and patent applications focused on graphene – more than any other female scientist. She is one of only a handful of female scientists to hold over 150 US patents. Dr. Zhamu led Global Graphene Group to become the world’s largest manufacturer of single-layer graphene oxide. She co-invented graphene thermal film, graphene-enabled sulfur cathode, high-capacity anodes and graphene supercapacitors.

“Supporting women in STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) is very important to me,” said Dr. Zhamu, who holds a BS and PhD from Beijing University of Aeronautics & Astronautics, China. “Being a woman in science, I’ve found you need to be strong and confident in yourself to be successful. Then you can become a leader and truly make an impact.”

“It’s very important to me to support other women in science and support girls pursuing STEM education,” said Zhamu. “Female scientists have so much to offer our chosen fields of study, and we’ll continue to be a big part of the future in technology.”

Changing the EV Battery Game

Global Graphene Group’s Dr. Evan House, Senior Battery Scientist, will present at this year’s Graphene Automotive Show in Detroit, Michigan, on Thursday, March 5. He will speak about graphene-enhanced current collectors bringing longer life to battery cells and reduced cost for EV batteries. Dr. House will discuss how G3 has developed next-generation battery technologies that address the most pressing problems for consumer electronics and solutions that will enable faster adoption of electric vehicles (“EV”), and how our battery technology solves issues with flammability, high cost, slow charging and low energy density. He will speak about our graphene-enhanced current collectors and how our testing has shown they can:

  • Lower battery costs and / or extend EV range through greater cycling efficiencies
  • Lower battery costs through longer cycle lifetime as electrode corrosion is eliminated
  • Lower application costs via graphene armors allowance for simplified thermal management systems
  • Improved safety due to reduced heat build-up from un-armored cells continual impedance growth

Global Graphene Group Named R&D 100 Award Finalist

DAYTON, OHIO, January 16, 2020 – Global Graphene Group (G3) was honored recently by R&D World, naming G3’s graphene-protected lithium metal anode for rechargeable metal batteries solution (HELiX™) a finalist for the 2019 R&D 100 Award. The R&D 100 Awards recognize the top 100 most technologically significant new products of the year.

HELiX is a single-layer graphene-protected lithium metal technology making high-energy rechargeable metal batteries viable. It allows extremely low anode usage (anode/cathode ratio ≤ 10%), creating an energy density over 350 Wh/kg and 1,000 Wh/L, which yields a 60-80% improvement over current lithium-ion batteries. This offers unprecedented opportunities for advanced portable devices/electric vehicles.

HELiX is a readily available, drop-in, graphene-enabled anode solution for all types of high-energy, lithium metal batteries (e.g. advanced Li-ion, all solid-state batteries, Li-S, Li-Se, and Li-air cells). It adds immediate value to any rechargeable battery, including, but not limited to power drones, renewable energy storage systems, aerospace applications, unmanned vehicles, and electric vehicles (EVs). Additionally, due to its performance, batteries can be reduced in size by 30-40% while still providing the required energy. This provides room for other components or allows for significant reductions in size and weight.  The most promising opportunity for HELiX graphene-enabled anode solutions is in EV batteries, where it can replace incumbent (graphite) technology today and drive an accelerated adoption of EVs due to improved cost and performance.

“Rechargeable lithium metal batteries for next-generation portable devices and EVs must meet several challenging requirements: safety, high energy density, long cycle life, and low cost. This is the end-goal laid out by nearly every EV manufacturer for the foreseeable future,” said Dr. Aruna Zhamu, VP of New Product / Process Development at G3.

“Global Graphene Group has developed an enabling anode-protecting technology that is essential to successful operation of safe, high-energy and long-cycle-life lithium metal batteries working with liquid, quasi-solid, or solid electrolytes,” continued Dr. Zhamu. “This HELiX product has overcome the long-standing issues thus far impeding successful commercialization of all the rechargeable batteries that make use of lithium metal as the anode material. Our HELiX technology is available and offers a drop-in, scalable, facile, cost reducing improvement over current solutions. It lowers the battery cost to less than $100 US $/kWh.”

G3 developed and produces the HELiX solution in its Dayton, Ohio, facilities.

G3 was named an R&D 100 winner in 2018 for its graphene-enabled silicon anode (GCATM).

Global Graphene Group, Alison Asia Pacific Ltd. Sign LOI

DAYTON, OHIO, November 22, 2019 – Global Graphene Group (G3) and Alison Asia Pacific Ltd. (Alison) have signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) for business over the next five years. Alison, a Hong Kong-based company, plans to purchase over 300 metric tons of silicon oxide anode material from G3.

Alison’s products are widely used in different industries such as energy, environmental protection, sewage treatment, and other fields. G3’s silicon oxide anode will support Alison’s rechargeable batteries. G3 will ramp up production of its silicon oxide anode to meet demand.

“This LOI will drive expansion in our Dayton, Ohio, and Taiwan production facilities over the next five years,” said John Davis, G3 Chief Operating Officer. “This is a significant amount of product to produce, and we will expand our team to meet these needs. We look forward to our partnership with Alison and helping them enhance their products.”

Silicon monoxide (SiO) is an emerging anode material to be utilized in high-energy Li-ion batteries (LIBs). SiO’s stable structure makes it a promising anode capacity booster as a drop-in solution to improve the energy density of LIBs. A thin carbon coating is necessary to secure high active material utilization and reduce irreversible loss during cell formation. Ghas developed graphene-SiO material with high capacity (> 1,500 mAh/g), good first cycle efficiency (> 75%), and low swelling (close to the graphite anode).

G3 holds key patents for this technology and self-sustaining graphene supplies, which lead to a cost-effective SiO anode product and is part of G3’s cutting-edge graphene-enabled battery products.
